Cynthia Nixon: Hey, you guys! I'm a socialist too, ya know!

I don’t know if former Sex & the City star Cynthia Nixon has convinced many people to vote for her but the media still loves to cover her campaign. As the summer wears on and the days until the primary election dwindle, Nixon seems to have grown increasingly desperate. She’s doing anything and everything possible to attract some headlines and chip away at Governor Andrew Cuomo’s lead and the recent surge in Democratic enthusiasm for socialism apparently hasn’t escaped her attention. In a recent interview, she informed the public that she too was jumping on the Democratic Socialist bandwagon. (Politico)

Gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon considers herself a democratic socialist, she told POLITICO on Tuesday.

Nixon, an actor best known for her role in “Sex and the City,” is running a left-flank challenge to Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a Democratic primary this September. She has promised to raise taxes on the rich to increase funding for public schools and mass transit, and she supports a single-payer health care system.

Nixon spokeswoman Lauren Hitt said that the campaign has been in touch with members of the Democratic Socialists of America, which backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as well as Julia Salazar, a state Senate candidate in Brooklyn who has cross-endorsed Nixon. In an email passed along by Hitt, Nixon told POLITICO that she sees herself in their vein.

“Some more establishment, corporate Democrats get very scared by this term but if being a democratic socialist means that you believe health care, housing, education and the things we need to thrive should be a basic right not a privilege then count me in,” Nixon wrote.

Count me in!”

Okay, Ms. Nixon. We’ll be sure to do that. Mark her down for being a supporter of the theory of government which has led to the current utopia being enjoyed by the happy citizens of Venezuela. Just think… elect Cynthia Nixon and you too could soon be eating your pets and embarking on exciting safaris to the zoo so you can shoot down the captive animals there for a meal. And who needs toilet paper? It’s a useless symbol of the bourgeoisie. Also, basic medical care, vaccinations and essential medicines have now reached a level of true equality in Venezuela for 90% of the population. Of course, that level is… zero.

Is this the selling point which finally puts Nixon on the map and sets her up for a successful primary run? Who are we kidding? As near as I can tell, no major polling groups are still even interested in the race. The last poll done by a recognized organization was more than a month ago and Cuomo was leading by 35 points statewide. In her home turf of New York City, she’s losing by almost sixty. She’s not even capturing a significant amount of the women’s vote.

If claiming to be a socialist doesn’t do the trick I’m not sure what other options Nixon has in her arsenal. She already tried declaring ICE to be a terrorist organization. I get that she’ trying to go after Cuomo from his left flank, but if she tries to get any further left at this point she’ll need to fly to South America and marry one of Chavez’s daughters or something. (Of course, that might be risky because in many socialist outposts you can still be killed for being gay.)

Nixon might want to keep in mind one fact of American electoral life which many of her Democratic colleagues are forgetting. There are pockets of liberal enthusiasm where this might work, but nationally it’s a non-starter. Back during the run-up to the 2016 election Pew asked Americans about eleven different categories of candidates and if they would be willing to support them as president. Those categories included different races, religions, sexual orientation, gender… you name it. A majority of Americans were willing to give a look to all of them but one. Socialists.
