When did the media fall in love with Kim Jong-un's sister?

While I realize that the Olympic Games are supposed to be a time of international comity, one-world for peace and trust falls all around, something far more strange than usual is going on in Pyeong Chang. It was definitely big news when the two Koreas decided to act in a civil fashion toward each other and even combine some of their athletic teams. There’s an ongoing debate as to whether this should be at least partially credited to the good cop bad cop routine of Donald Trump, but in the end that doesn’t really matter. Anything that gets Little Rocket Man to act a bit less like a homicidal maniac bent on global destruction is at least a temporary positive.

But we are still talking about North Korea here. You remember them, right? Despotic ruling family, unstable maniac with nuclear weapons, locks up his own people to work them to death in hidden gulags… remember? So why are some in the media suddenly going gaga over Kum Jong-un’s sister Kim Yo Jong? If you think that’s an exaggeration, check out the title of this CNN piece. Kim Jong Un’s sister is stealing the show at the Winter Olympics

If “diplomatic dance” were an event at the Winter Olympics, Kim Jong Un’s younger sister would be favored to win gold.

With a smile, a handshake and a warm message in South Korea’s presidential guest book, Kim Yo Jong has struck a chord with the public just one day into the PyeongChang Games.

“I hope Pyongyang and Seoul get closer in our people’s hearts and move forward the future of prosperous unification,” she said in her guest book message, referring to the capitals of North and South Korea.

Seen by some as her brother’s answer to American first daughter Ivanka Trump, Kim, 30, is not only a powerful member of Kim Jong Un’s kitchen cabinet but also a foil to the perception of North Korea as antiquated and militaristic.

It goes on like that for paragraph after paragraph. Kim’s sister is compared to Ivanka Trump multiple times in the article. They veer off into a glowing fashion review at one point, discussing her, “wine-colored jacket and black pants.” They talk about how close she was to her father (the previous tyrant) and how impressive it is that she was selected to serve on the Politburo.

Are you kidding me? And lest you think CNN was the only media outlet doing this, here’s an interesting tweet from Phillip Bump.

Allahpundit noticed this earlier today, which is actually how I first caught wind of this new trend.

Before we all get caught up in the love festival and start ordering our Kim Yo Jong t-shirts, can we take a moment and remind all of our friends in the media of something? This is one of the most evil regimes on the planet. Their atrocities against foreigners (including Americans) are only outdone by the horrors they inflict on their own subjects. Kim’s sister is part of that leadership structure, not some idle observer. She is part of the Politburo and is complicit in the torture, starvation and international terrorism brought to us by her brother, their father and their grandfather.

You know who actually has some insight into the wonders of North Korea? The Warmbier family. They should, since they lost a child to Kim Yo Jong’s monstrous family. And they want to remind everyone that her presence at the games should be a reminder of their pain.

Kim Yo Jong is not Ivanka Trump. She is not a notable potential leader or admirable figure. She is part of the leadership of an evil empire. And if you work in the press from the West and you’re out there being “impressed” by this woman giving a nasty side-eye to our Vice President, you’re not doing your job. No matter how much you may despise the President of the United States and his administration, there is no situation where North Korea’s leadership should be “admired” for insulting us.
