If only she’d been five feet taller. Then she could have attacked something. (I apologize in advance.)

For those of you are in or around Washington, D.C. or just plan on visiting over the winter, how would you feel if the National Mall was adorned with a 45 foot tall statue of a naked woman? You may be in position to find out if a proposal currently being evaluated for the annual “Catharsis on the Mall” festival gets final approval. A 45-foot-tall statue of a nude woman, weighing in at 16,000 pounds, will greet visitors on the Mall for four months if activists have their way. They say the steel statue would stand in a yoga mountain pose near the Washington Monument facing the White House, depicting a strong woman feeling confident in her body.

The massive artwork would be the main attraction at the annual “Catharsis on the Mall” in November — a festival in the nation’s capital dubbed a “Burning Man” for Washington. Burning Man, an annual desert festival outside Reno, Nev., is known for building a hippie-like community that promotes art, self-expression, inclusiveness and civic engagement.

Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the National Park Service, said the agency is reviewing permits for the statue, adding that it’s “plausible” that the agency would allow such a large and striking sculpture to remain through the winter months. Catharis organizers want the statue in place through March.

The statue is named R-Evolution and it was created by the artist Marco Cochrane. I’ll confess that I had to Google what a yoga mountain pose is, but that does seem to be about it. (Albeit on a much grander scale.) The model for the statue was Deja Solis, a dancer who apparently approved the use of her image in the project and several others like it.

It’s not difficult to figure out a motive here. While not being stated openly, you only have to think back to the Women’s March which took place before Donald Trump was even sworn into office and the constant themes of how he was “anti-woman” throughout the campaign. Wanting to have this display, described as “depicting a strong woman feeling confident in her body,” facing down the Oval Office all winter isn’t particularly subtle.

But with all that said, should anyone really block this? There have been other large installations there over the winter before. (One project which was denied a permit involved setting a vast wooden structure ablaze, but that was just a fire hazard.) Yes, it’s a naked woman, but there’s nothing particularly graphic about the, er… private areas. It’s really more in the tradition of classic Greek sculpture in terms of detail. From the various pictures available online, it’s actually rather tasteful.

So what do you think? Should they approve it? Honestly, I’m not coming up with much of a reason why not. If parents allow their children to go to a museum and see any classical sculptures or paintings including the naked human form they shouldn’t have much trouble explaining this.
