Kathy Griffin finally finds someone to defend her

After “comedian” Kathy Griffin showed up with her new lawyer to announce that, “Trump broke me” she got more laughs from across the entire political spectrum than she likely ever received during her stand-up career. And those who weren’t laughing at her (not to be confused with laughing with her) were seething. She quickly learned that she had become despised by not only conservatives, but many of her long time liberal friends. According to some reports, her old buddy (and New Years Eve gig partner) Anderson Cooper wasn’t even returning her calls. Things got so bad that even Al Franken pulled the plug on her.

By that point she must have truly felt like she was standing alone. But don’t worry, Kathy. You’ve still got one friend willing to stand up for you and defend your… art. And it’s none other than Alec Baldwin. In a brief Tweetstorm he declared his loyalty as part of the Resistance. (The Hill)

“Dear Kathy Griffin, Kathy….baby…I’ve been there. The whole Henry Hyde thing [with] Conan, where we bring out an oxygen mask at the end? a joke. That’s what I thought. That’s what we intended. No one walked out of the studio and said, “No! We’re serious!” No one,” Baldwin wrote, referencing comments he made in 1998 about a Republican lawmaker.

“But all your gutless, weasels in the GOP insisted that I actually threatened Hyde. They played the victim beautifully. Kathy…fu– them. Fu– them all. [no one] believes [you] meant [to] threaten Trump,” Baldwin continued.

“Trump is such a senile idiot, all he has is Twitter fights. ignore him. Like the leaders of all the other countries in the world. Ignore him.”

Here’s an interesting test of character which we can keep an eye on as it plays out. When Griffin first busted out that horrible photo we had finally found a line which couldn’t be crossed and she was abandoned by people in droves. People on the Left from Hollywood to CNN to the Democratic Party tossed her rapidly under the bus. But there wasn’t that much of a cost to doing so because Griffin was already in the twilight of her career and, as she described it herself, had never made it above “the D List” in terms of celebrity firepower.

Not so with Alec Baldwin. Say what you will about him but he’s made it all the way to the A List. From movies (it’s so hard to believe that he was once Jack Ryan) to game shows to Saturday Night Live, Baldwin has star power. So now that he’s decided to drive his stake into the sand on that lonely island with Kathy Griffin, will the rest of the glitterati condemn him as well? Don’t hold your breath. If anyone is rude enough to ask the rest of his colleagues (unlikely) they will probably mumble something about how everyone has to make up their own minds.

The truly strange thing is that this story would have already been on its way down the memory hole if Griffin wasn’t keeping it alive herself. On the day that the original news broke and she put out a video apologizing, I jumped in on Twitter and said that this was the best we should expect and maybe we should forget about it. But that press conference showed that her apology was hollow and she was ready to double down. This has to be intentional, right? I mean, she’s just doing this to try to revive her brand and try to capitalize off of the attention, isn’t she?

Thus far it doesn’t seem to be working. But hey… maybe Alec Baldwin will give her a job.
