California Gov: You people not liking massive tax hikes are "freeloaders"

You may recall that on Monday we discussed some discontent among the peasants in California who were enraged over a new package of gasoline taxes and automobile licensing fees which recently went into effect. So unhappy were the voters that an initiative was started to recall one of their Democratic legislators and another measure was put forward for a referendum vote which would repeal the expensive new measures.

Well, that news isn’t sitting well with Governor Jerry Brown. He was quickly out on the trail defending Josh Newman (the Assembly member facing the recall) and insisting that good government costs money. (Orange County Register)

A day after signature gathering began to recall a Fullerton legislator for supporting new transportation taxes, Gov. Jerry Brown offered an impassioned defense of the road-improvement plan and of the Democratic state senator under attack.

Brown was also dismissive of efforts by a Republican assemblyman from Huntington Beach to qualify a ballot measure that could reverse the Democrat-backed tax plan.

“Roads require money to fix,” Brown said during a Friday visit to Orange County. “Republicans say there’s a magic source of money — it doesn’t exist. … You want to borrow money and pay double? Or do nothing? Or take money from universities?”

At first glance it looked as if Brown was mostly going after the California Republicans who opposed the taxes in the first place, but that didn’t last for long. As reported by our colleague Kira Davis at Redstate, the Governor had some harsh words for the voters as well. You don’t want to pay up? Stop being a bunch of freeloaders.

In response to the outrage of taxpayers who were blindsided by the massive increase and those supporting the recall of Newman, Brown took a less than sympathetic tone.

“The freeloaders — I’ve had enough of them,” Brown said, adding that the approved tax and fee hikes bring those charges to the level they were 30 years ago if adjusted for inflation. “They have a president that doesn’t tell the truth and they’re following suit.”

Newman will have campaign resources to prevail in a recall should the measure qualify for the ballot, Brown said.

“He’ll have whatever he needs,” he said.

Congratulations, California. You keep electing these same Democrats over and over again and then you act surprised when they make you one of the most heavily taxed populations in the country. And when you finally raise your voices to protest the out of control taxation and spending, the state party’s titular leader is brazen enough to come straight out and tell you what he really thinks of you. Democratic governance is big business and you’re responsible for footing the bill for it. If you don’t like it you’re obviously a bunch of freeloading cheapskates.

How much more of this are you going to put up with? I’m not entirely without sympathy, but at this point California’s voters appear to be in the political equivalent of an abusive relationship. The Democrats continue to beat you up and then insult and berate you if you dare to complain about it. It’s time to break the cycle of abuse and get yourself a new paramour who treats you right. Nobody else can save you unless you’re willing to take the first steps to help yourselves.
