UPDATE 7:50: (Jazz) Some detailed information on the shooter, collected by Buzzfeed. It’s all worth a read, but the motive of Gavin Long doesn’t seem to leave many questions.

“One hundred percent of revolutions, of victims fighting their oppressors, from victims fighting their bullies, 100% have been successful through fighting back through bloodshed,” he said in one video. “Zero have been successful through simply protesting. It has never been successful and it never will.”

He also referred to himself as an alpha male, unafraid of taking that step.

“If y’all want to keep protesting, do that, but for the serious ones, the real ones, the alpha ones, we know what it’s going to take.”

Oh, and he was familiar with the “achievements” of the man who murdered the cops in Dallas.

UPDATE 4:50: (Jazz) CBS News (among others) is reporting that the deceased shooter has been identified as Gavin Eugene Long.

The deceased suspect in the deadly shooting of Baton Rouge law enforcement officers appeared to have attacked police on his 29th birthday, CBS News has learned.

The suspect has been identified as a black male named Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri, sources tell CBS News. He was born on July 17, 1987.

One suspect was killed and two others might still be at large, Casey Rayborn Hicks, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, previously said. However, Louisiana state police said Sunday afternoon there is “no active shooter” in Baton Rouge.

UPDATE 4:10: (Jazz) Local press is reporting that police “have no active shooter” in the area at this time. Obviously that doesn’t mean that there are no other suspects at this point, but there’s clearly a lot of investigation yet to be done. Still no confirmed name of the one shooter they took down.

UPDATE 2:40: (Jazz) One shooter confirmed dead, two more are being sought. Three police officers EOW. Of the other three involved, one in critical condition, one in fair condition, one with less serious wounds.

UPDATE 12:40: (Jazz) CNN is updating the report from Baton Rouge to indicate that three officers are dead and three more are injured. One suspect is dead and “multiple” (number unknown at this time) other possible shooters are being sought. One witness reports that the shooters were dressed in “ninja” style, all in black.

Two more incidents of police officers being attacked shattered the peace of Sunday morning today as ambush style attacks were carried out against law enforcement in different parts of the country. The first, as reported by CNN, was an attack on Baton Rouge police near the local police station, and early reports indicate that as many as three cops may be dead. Seven cops in total were reported as being shot by a man seen walking by the side of a major road carrying a rifle.

Three officers are feared dead after a shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, officials said. Kip Holden, the mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish, said authorities were still trying to get a handle on the situation, but added, “The count is three officers dead possibly.”

The victims may include police officers and sheriff’s deputies

“There is still an active scene. They are investigating,” he said. “Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything.”
The shooter is believed to be down as well, Holden said.

This is a developing story and, as always, we’ll need additional confirmation. Reporters on the scene indicate that the incident evolved into a shootout between the attacker and the police, so the shooter may be among the casualties. Baton Rouge is, of course, the scene of the recent police shooting of Alton Sterling which is still under investigation. There have been massive protests and marches in response, so while it’s too early to pin anything down, it doesn’t require a great stretch of the imagination to tie the two events together.

This attack took place within hours of another ambush in Wisconsin. A Milwaukee police officer was shot multiple times while sitting in his squad car outside of a residence where his partner was investing a report of domestic violence. (WISN News)

A Milwaukee police officer was shot in a “vicious” attack early Sunday as he sat in his squad car while colleagues investigated a domestic disturbance call, an official said.

The suspected shooter, identified by police as a 20-year-old West Allis man with two felonies on his record, was found dead in a nearby yard, they said.

The incident began as a response to a domestic disturbance call near South 17th Street and West Morgan Avenue at about 2 a.m. During that investigation, someone fired shots into the squad car, striking an officer “multiple” times,” Asst. Police Chief William Jessup said in a morning press conference.

The shooter in this case has supposedly been identified and is dead. It’s being described as an apparent suicide. Unlike the Baton Rouge attack, this one will require many additional details to determine if this was another ambush attack on the cops or something related to the reported domestic violence report.

We’ll update this thread at the top as developments warrant, but I’ll close with one reminder. An attack on a police officer is not an assault on one individual. It represents an attack on the rule of law and the fabric of society which separates us from chaos and mayhem. This must stop and it needs to be halted by any means necessary.
