Another topic / issues show this week on Politinerds. Doug and I are joined by Michael “Thrifty Nerd” DiMauro and his partner Tim Lanning, the founders and proprietors of Geekly Inc. They have taken a low investment start-up idea for a “nerd centric” portal delivering a variety of online content and expanded it to reach a significant audience. Rather than relying on traditional banner ads or Google inserts, they’ve explored some newer models for monetizing the site. It’s a business model which relies a lot more heavily on creativity and communications than start-up funding and may prove inspirational for others who are considering launching their own business online.

We discuss some of the content they offer, which includes multiple teams who record Live Play tabletop gaming podcasts (also the original Game of Thrones podcast) as well as reviews of video and tabletop games, movies, books and television shows with a “geek” focus. They also discuss some of the challenges and rewards encountered in funding such an operation. Check out the way they’re turning a fun, creative idea into a business.
