If not now, when? Al Franken 2016

You have to hand it to Democrat strategist Donna Brizile, who really should be one of the most popular people in Republican circles. The same woman who thought asking how much money Hillary makes is sexist and can’t understand why her health care costs are rising is clearly undeterred by the results of the 2014 elections and is moving on toward the next battle with a song in her heart. Good for you! Optimism is vanishing quality in American life. And when asked who might take a run at the brass ring on the Democrat side in 2016 besides her stated favorite, she was quick to supply a list of highly qualified potential candidates.

Her first pick was Bernie Sanders (After mentioning Joe Biden) and oh wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if it happened. But she had previously floated some other ideas. One of the obvious choices which I’d apparently overlooked was Minnesota Senator Al Franken.

Ryan Lovelace at The Corner reminds us of one of the oh so many reasons that a Franken run would be pure comedy gold.

Franken, a comedian known for his work on Saturday Night Live and the author of the book Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations, wrote a satirical book in 2000 about a Franken presidency titled Why Not Me? In the book, Franken’s presidency is a disaster and he is forced to resign after 144 days. In real life, some Democrats who want to find a liberal who could challenge a potential Clinton candidacy seem to think Franken would be a good choice.

Yes, Franken won in Minnesota. (With the benefit of some bags of votes in a car trunk, but still…) But it’s also worth remembering that he won in Minnesota. With all due respect to Ed’s home stomping grounds, let me add two words to that thought. Jessie Ventura. His viability as a national candidate is what makes him the perfect choice… for the GOP.
