Video: Pope offers blessings for victims of Newtown tragedy

This has been a pretty awful weekend, and there’s no doubt about it. I haven’t done one of these in a while, but I think I’ll set aside a bit of space this evening for a palate cleanser of a different sort. A very long ways away, the Pope came to address the masses and offer solace to the people of Newtown in their time of need. Here’s the video.

Speaking in English, Benedict said he was “deeply saddened by Friday’s senseless violence in Newtown, Connecticut.”

“I assure the families of the victims, especially those who lost a child, of my closeness in prayer,” the pope said in his first public comments on the massacre by a lone gunman. “May the God of consolation touch their hearts and ease their pain.”

I hope that is of some comfort. Be at peace.
