Clearly, Democrat donors have little interest in supporting Vice President Trump in this cycle. Despite the spin coming from Team Biden, the presser last night failed to impress big-ticket donors supporting Joe Biden's re-election effort.
And now Biden faces an unexpected funding hole of $90 million, the New York Times just reported:
Some major Democratic donors have told the largest pro-Biden super PAC, Future Forward, that roughly $90 million in pledged donations is now on hold if President Biden remains atop the ticket, according to two people who have been briefed on the conversations.
The frozen contributions include multiple eight-figure commitments, according to the two people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the situation. The decision to withhold such enormous sums of money is one of the most concrete examples of the fallout from Mr. Biden’s poor debate performance at the end of June.
Last night, Biden insisted that he would stay in the race, and that no one had shown him any data to suggest he could lose in November. No one apparently showed these donors that Biden's debate performance was a one-off either, however. Yesterday's gaffery and vagueness didn't restore confidence, either in Biden or the gaslighting campaign that covered his cognitive decline until two weeks ago.
That's not good news for a campaign that already had a fundraising lead wiped out by Donald Trump in the last quarter. And it also now suggests that Biden's air campaign might not be able to take off:
Future Forward was anointed by Mr. Biden’s campaign as its leading super PAC in the early stages of the 2024 race, and it has already announced $250 million in television and digital advertising reservations set to begin at the end of the Democratic National Convention next month. ...
The potential shortfall in super PAC cash comes as the campaign itself is bracing for a rough July fund-raising period as major donors question Mr. Biden’s viability to win in November.
David just wrote that Democrats may be only "mostly doomed" in a great reference to The Princess Bride, but this does really look like a doom loop. Three more House Democrats went public with calls for Biden to withdraw this morning, eliminating the impact of whatever spin the White House and Team Biden tried to apply to last night's depressing presser. And we're not even at noon ET yet.
Also, House Democrat Caucus Leader Hakeem Jeffries released a statement that was curiously absent of support for Biden's candidacy:
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met privately with President Joe Biden on Thursday night to relay his caucus' anxieties about the president's reelection bid.
It is not clear whether Jeffries called on Biden to withdraw from the race, an outcome that many of his members are publicly and privately seeking. Jeffries told lawmakers he “directly expressed the full breadth of insight, heartfelt perspectives and conclusions about the path forward that the Caucus has shared in our recent time together.”
If the money's disappearing, then Biden will have to get by on just small-donor contributions and the current $240 million cash-on-hand his campaign has. That would be enough to compete, but not enough to win even for a candidate with full compos mentis. This may be the biggest signal yet to Biden that he simply can't stay on the ticket, but ... will it matter to the Bidens at this point? Stay tuned.
