The most remarkable part of this clip? Eric Adams is still smarter than Bill de Blasio, but … the gap is narrowing. Yesterday, the mayor of New York City and the proclaimer of illegal-immigration sanctuary there expressed his frustration that Texas governor Greg Abbott keeps sending him opportunities to make good on that pledge.

Now Adams says he’s “deeply contemplating” the idea of sending busloads of New Yorkers to Texas to tell voters here how to vote in Abbott’s re-election campaign. What could go wrong?

We had a lot of fun with this on Twitter yesterday. A number of us remember the old Pace Picante Sauce commercials from the 1980s that accurately reflect how Texans — outside of Austin, at least — think of the opinions and tastes of New York City. There were a series of these, apparently aimed at a competitor based in the Big Apple (Pace was based in San Antonio, at least at that time), and New York City was the punch line, although the last line was different in each one:

These were pretty hilarious, but not as funny as Adams’ suggestion. Texans are already a wee bit sensitive to the influx of new residents from blue states. Billboards dot the landscape with various messages urging people to remember why they moved here and why they moved away from places like California and New York. (And Minnesota, I suppose, but I digress.)

At least those people live here now. Just try to imagine the way Texans will receive door-knockers who deliver a message like: “Hello, I’m from New York City, and I’d like to tell you how Mayor Eric Adams thinks you should vote.” It would come across as “Youse hicks betta vote for Beto, if you know what’s good for ya.” A bless your heart might be the kindest reaction they get, followed by gales of laughter.

Speaking of Robert O’Rourke, the race isn’t exactly going swimmingly for him at the moment. There hasn’t been a new poll in the RCP aggregate in over a month, but despite lots of hype over his appalling stunt in Uvalde as a supposed game-changer, the game has pretty much stayed the same. Abbott has a six-point advantage in the aggregate and not one poll has yet put O’Rourke within the margin of error. Despite Beto’s high name recognition and spending, he’s only been as high as 45% in one poll — and that was an Emerson poll in February that had Abbott at 52%. The most recent poll, at the beginning of July, came from the University of Houston and had Abbott up five over Beto, 49/44. That’s almost exactly where the race stood in the previous UH poll in January, when Abbott was up 48/43.

Now imagine what that will look like after Adams’ Yankees land in Texas Ranger country to boost Beto while complaining about having a few dozen illegal immigrants dropped off in their city. Beto loses by twenty-five points easy under Mayor Adams’ plan.

By the way, it’s tough to understand why Adams is complaining now. Did he object when Joe Biden was flying illegal immigrants into the state of New York last year?

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Tuesday confirmed reporting by the New York Post that the Biden administration has been quietly flying underage illegal immigrants from the border to New York in the dead of night.

During a press briefing, a reporter asked why the administration is “flying thousands of migrants from the border to Florida and New York in the middle of the night.”

“Well I’m not sure it’s in the middle of the night but let me tell you what’s happening here. It is our —” Psaki said, before the reporter interrupted with various “very early” morning times that flights have taken place.

“Here we are talking about early flights, earlier than you might like to take a flight,” Psaki said. “It is our legal responsibility to safely care for unaccompanied children until they can be swiftly unified with a parent or a vetted sponsor and that’s something we take seriously.”

Maybe Adams just doesn’t like buses. Or maybe Hizzoner should send busloads of New Yorkers to campaign against Joe Biden and Democrats this year. “For the good of America,” we should get those people out of office. Texans might actually respect that. At the very least, we wouldn’t be laughing through our Stetsons* at Adams’ cluelessness.
