Morning Consult: Biden's below Trump in voters' first-year report card

Joe Biden’s cratering at the first anniversary of his inauguration has achieved a polling consensus, it seems. Gallup’s poll put Biden just a skosh above Donald Trump’s one-year approval level, and Biden had a lot more support from national media in 2021 than Trump did in any year.

Now Morning Consult reports that voters gave Biden a slightly worse first-year report card than Trump:

Joe Biden pitched himself as the antithesis of Donald Trump, but the president is ending his first year in office with a similarly dismal report card from voters as his predecessor.

Like Trump, more voters gave Biden a failing mark at the quarter mark of his term than those who awarded an “A” or “B” combined, according to a POLITICO/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday. About 37 percent of those surveyed rated Biden’s performance as an “F,” compared to the 31 percent who gave either an “A” or “B” grade for the past year.

Biden’s results were even a touch worse than Trump’s at the same point in their presidencies, when 35 percent of voters in 2018 gave Trump a failing mark against 34 percent A’s and B’s. Slightly more voters gave Biden the middling mark of “C” than Trump got in the comparable 2018 survey, 18 percent to 14 percent, and the pair got nearly identical percentages of “D” grades.

Before we get to the nitty-gritty of these numbers, let’s take a look at why Biden’s getting Fs from 37% of the electorate. Here’s what voters say are their top priorities for policy at the moment:

With this in mind, on what has Biden focused? A federal takeover of elections — including the banning of broadly popular voter-ID laws — and a massive, progressive social-engineering spending bill. Biden and his party have ignored issues that matter every day to American households like inflation, supply-chain issues and shortages, and fulfilling a slew of promises on pandemic management. As Politico Playbook noted last week, very few voters think congressional oversight of elections is a priority:

However, electoral reform in general is not a top issue of concern for the public right now. We asked voters which of three voting reform ideas should be “the top priority” for Congress to pass: reforming Congress’ role in counting Electoral College votes, expanding voting access in federal elections or expanding oversight of states’ changes to voting practices. “None of the above” (32%) beat out all of them.

It’s not that Biden’s failing as much as he isn’t even bothering to show up.

With that chart in mind, let’s see how Biden gets graded on these priorities, Fs and As/Bs:

  • Economy: 38% Fs, 28% As & Bs combined
  • Jobs: 34/31
  • Immigration: 40/20 (!)
  • Unity: 40/23 (!!)
  • Health care: 29/31
  • COVID-19: 31/35
  • Terrorism: 36/25
  • Foreign relations: 35/28
  • Global warming: 28/27

Biden’s flunking across the board, especially on the highest priorities. Mediaite also points out a few more notable results:

In other notable takeaways from the Politico/Morning Consult survey, 68 percent of respondents believe the nation is on the “wrong track,” compared to 32 percent who believe it is going in the “right direction.” And overall, Biden’s job approval stands at 40 percent, compared to 56 percent who disapprove.

That’s precisely what Gallup found in its latest polling too. Rasmussen also offers up its year-end assessment of Biden, which is almost identical to these other two pollsters:

President Joe Biden’s first year in office has been a failure, according to a majority of voters who say the Democrat has left the country more divided than when he was inaugurated.

A new national telephone and online survey by Rasmussen Reports finds that just 12% of Likely U.S. voters rate Biden’s first year in office Very Successful, while another 26% say his first year as president has been Somewhat Successful. Ten percent (10%) believe Biden has been Somewhat Unsuccessful during his first year in office, while 50% rate his first year Very Unsuccessful.

Biden’s setting his hair on fire over issues that don’t concern voters while ignoring the fires of inflation and its impact on households across the country. At the same time, his mandates and CDC guidelines requiring testing to access public services and spaces have run into Biden’s failure to boost testing production and created a de facto shutdown that puts consumers right back in the April 2020 paradigm. His presidency is a disaster, and the only thing keeping his polling from utter collapse is a sympathetic media industry desperate for distractions and heroic narratives.
