Janet Roberson is a concerned mom of elementary school kids in the small town of Benicia, California.

She also used to be a real estate agent, until a coordinated campaign run by members of the Progressive Democrats of Benicia and Benicia Resist got her fired from her job at the fast-growing real estate company Compass.

The campaign against Roberson was clearly coordinated, and effectively used slander and extortion to silence an opponent of gender ideology.

Roberson is fighting back, and the Progressive Democrats of Benicia are feeling the heat. When you go to their website the first thing you see is a denial that they had anything to do with it, suggesting that two can play this game. It may well be true that the group as a GROUP didn’t do the deed, but their officers and allies perpetrated it. And if their complaint is that they are being unfairly tarred (I don’t agree) then they should look in the mirror, because that is the #1 tactic.

Roberson’s sin was to criticize gender ideology at a school board meeting, making the obvious observation that teaching kids that sex doesn’t exist, using time in math classes to discuss gender is wasted educational time, and that encouraging kids to take puberty blockers is not appropriate for the schools.

In return, she was called a racist, bigot, and a Nazi in print and in an email to her employer, who the activists pressured to fire. For example, a letter was written to the local paper, which in turn was sent to the corporate headquarters of Roberson’s employer.

Compass Real Estate’s Janet Roberson also hosts a website and Facebook page called “Benicia Freedom.” Explore these web pages and you will find a plethora of racist, homophobic, transphobic, anti-COVID safety, and anti-COVID vaccine writings, along with content that favors Eugenics.

For those blessedly unfamiliar with the concept, eugenics is the forced sterilization/execution of those who are genetically “undesirable” in order to obtain an ideal population. Eugenics was practiced by the M.D.s who worked at concentration camps such as Auschwitz and Dachau. Yes, proponents of eugenics have their voices heard on “Benicia Freedom.”

This in itself would be bad enough if Janet Roberson was one lone bigoted parent with web design abilities who’s allowed to rant like a lunatic at school board meetings. However, Jan Roberson is also a local realtor whose unapologetic bigotry might well affect a marginalized person’s ability to purchase a home, contingent upon whether or not that buyer passes Janet Roberson’s racial/sexual purity test.

And if this were not bad enough, it gets still even worse. The Benicia Police Officers Association (BPD’s union) identifies itself as an entity that is “friends” with and is supportive of Benicia Freedom’s Facebook page.

Since Benicia no longer has its former police chief as its City Manager, I hope Benicia’s elected leaders will feel at liberty to investigate this disturbing alliance between Benicia’s law enforcement officers and this denigrating page.

The Treasurer of the Benicia Progressive Democrats then sent this opinion piece that Times-Herald printed to Compass, Roberson’s employer, along with threats that she was going to expose the company as harboring a Nazi-adjacent real estate agent who won’t sell to blacks or homosexuals by a certain date.

Robeson was let go.

You can see how this works: say something and we will ruin you. Once Roberson was fired the Treasurer of the Benicia Progressive Democrats spread the word to the Benicia Resist! group, along with an explanation for why this wasn’t cancel culture. It was simply “consequences” for wrongthink.

“Most of the work that will matter won’t happen on social media.”

No, it happens when slandering somebody to their employer and threatening to expose them as hateful bigots if they don’t bend their knees.

What Robeson has that most people do not is the ability to produce slick videos and a crazy good website, grabbing the notice of Libs of TikTok and now Elon Musk. As far as I know, nothing has come of the blowback yet except the nervousness of the Benicia Progressive Democrats, but it is early yet.

What we need is a well-funded group that is willing to help people fight back. The Left has mastered cancel culture–this effort was clearly coordinated and well executed–and a few scalps on the Left might give people pause.

It shouldn’t come to this. We should be able to disagree, even disagreeably, without trying to completely destroy others.

But that ship has sailed. So perhaps a well-funded nonprofit focused on canceling the cancellers might do the trick.
