The U.S. had a successful first day of the Rio Olympics, winning one gold medal and four silvers. Here are some of the highlights from around Rio:

Star of the day: Ginny Thrasher, USA, Shooting

Thrasher earns our first star of the day due to her upset victory in the 10m air rifle competition to snatch the first gold medal awarded in the Rio Olympics, and for sending Piers Morgan into an anti-gun hissy fit.

Also shining brightly: USA Swimming

The 4×100 freestyle relay team of Katie Ledecky, Abbey Weitzeil, Dana Vollmer, and Simone Manuel placed second to the Australian team, but they set a new American record. USA swimming also won silver medals in the men’s 400 individual medley and the women’s 400 individual medley events.

Comeback kids: The U.S. Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Team has had a rough run since their bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics, and they left London with just a single medal. After yesterday’s qualification, Team USA sits in second place by less than .100 behind the Chinese team. Sam Mikulak qualified into the all-around, floor, and horizontal bar finals, Danell Leyva (who was added to the team just two weeks ago when John Orozco tore his ACL) qualified into the horizontal bar and parallel bar finals, Alex Naddour qualified for the pommel horse final, Jake Dalton will be in the floor finals, and Chris Brooks will compete in the all-around final. The team final will take place on Monday. Good luck gentlemen!

More sharpshooters: The US Men’s Archery Team took the silver medal in the team competition, finishing behind South Korea. The U.S. were picked by Sports Illustrated to take the bronze.

Strange sofas lying in rivers capsizing kayakers are not acceptable for an Olympic venue: Nobody is quite sure if this story is true or not, but there are reports that a kayak competitor capsized after running into a submerged sofa on the course. (Either way, the #KayakSofa hashtag took off on Twitter.) Thankfully, yesterday’s competition was a preliminary round and medals were not awarded. Authorities are investigating whether or not there is rogue furniture on the kayak course.

Don’t Google this one: French gymnast Samir Ait Said suffered a devastating injury on the vault during Saturday’s qualification competition. Search for it at your own risk, and toss a prayer up for his recovery.
