Sunday morning talking heads

The Sunday shows take a rare break from Ukraine coverage this morning to bring us news of another war, Joe Biden vs. the, ahem, “Ultra MAGA” Republicans. The star guest is a man ludicrously identified by Biden as an exemplar of the breed: Florida Sen. Rick Scott, who’ll chat with “Face the Nation” about his new role as top Democratic villain. Scott is in their crosshairs because of the midterm agenda he proposed several months ago, one plank of which would involve taxing those who currently pay no federal income tax. Senate Republicans like Mitch McConnell wanted no part of that while Democrats were delighted to finally have something to attack the GOP over. Scott will use today’s media spotlight to defend his agenda and maybe ttake a jab or two at Cocaine Mitch, as rumor has it that Scott might be eyeing a challenge to him as majority leader next year.

Another “war” figure is booked this morning in the person of Dem Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York. He’ll follow Scott on “Face the Nation” to discuss the civil war erupting among New York Dems following the release of the state’s new redistricting map. Accusations of racism are being tossed around; incumbents with 30 years in the House under their belts are set to face off in primaries. It’s wrenching. It’s agonizing. It’s … hilarious.

Elsewhere, White House economic advisor Brian Deese will try to explain to “State of the Union” and “Fox News Sunday” why inflation isn’t getting better. And White House COVID czar Ashish Jha will appeal to viewers of “This Week” to care less about monkeypox, which is scarcely a threat, and more about COVID, which is gathering force yet again thanks to Omicron’s new subvariants. Finally, Pennsylvania’s new Democratic nominee for governor, Josh Shapiro, is set for “State of the Union” to defend his unforgivable decision to cut an ad aimed at helping his insurrectionist opponent, Doug Mastriano, in the Republican primary. The full line-up is at the AP.
