The pandemic era is over, the era of “living with COVID” has begun — at least until the next variant arrives. Democrats’ pivot from maximum restrictions to winding down mandates is the top story on today’s Sunday shows, with two governors featured to highlight their approach. One is a johnny come lately to the “back to normal” view: That’s Phil Murphy of New Jersey, who announced this week that his state’s school mask mandate will be rescinded next month. He’ll speak with “Face the Nation” about what went into his decision. How much of it was due to changing science and how much was due to his electoral near-death experience in November?

The other Dem governor featured is one to watch. Jared Polis of Colorado broke from the “safety first” pack in his party months ago, resisting demands from the left to impose a mask mandate on his state when cases began to surge this winter. Not gonna do it, he said, pointing to the fact that other states in the region that had reimposed mandates weren’t faring better than Colorado was. Polis also objected philosophically to ordering new mandates, arguing that the “emergency” era of the pandemic warranting strict precautions ended once vaccines became widely available. He’s booked for “Fox News Sunday” today, where he’ll be asked if he thinks his Democratic colleagues waited too long to re-embrace normalcy.

Elsewhere, war drums are beating in Russia and the U.S. natsec bureaucracy fears an invasion of Ukraine could come at any moment. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is set for “Face the Nation” and “State of the Union” while Pentagon spokesman John Kirby speaks with “Fox News Sunday” about whether there’s any realistic chance that Putin will walk away. If he doesn’t, we’re apt to see the biggest war in Europe since May 1945, with unpredictable consequences for the U.S.

Finally, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan will tell “State of the Union” why he decided not to run for Senate this year despite party leaders pleading with him to do so. Not that the truth is any real mystery. The full line-up is at the AP.
