Joe Biden wasn’t an envoy for anyone during the Six-Day War. He was in law school at the time and Golda Meir wasn’t prime minister yet. He’s mixing up his wars. He was an envoy shortly before the *Yom Kippur War* in 1973, when Meir was in office and he was a freshman senator.

Although if I were him, I wouldn’t be touting my work during that period to polish my pro-Israel credentials.

Apparently Biden’s advice to Meir was to … cede territory:

The meeting took place following his return from Egypt where he discussed with Saadat several things, roughly 40 days before the surprise attack that would turn into the Yom Kippur war.

Biden attempted to convince then Prime Minister Golda Meir that Israel withdraw first from areas with no strategic importance – meaning not the Golan heights – suggesting that peace could be acquired this way.

To that, Meir is described as rejecting his offers, arguing that the Jewish people could not afford to make such “mistakes” after the Holocaust, and that Arab Regimes tend to be unstable. Biden is also described as lacking experience in the diplomatic field by the “enthusiasm in his voice.”

The way Biden makes it sound in the clip, Meir wanted him to be some sort of go-between with Egypt in hopes of avoiding conflict, an unlikely role for a U.S. senator in his early 30s who’d been in office less than 10 months. In reality, per Jim Geraghty, Israeli officials noted that Biden “while speaking displayed a fervor and made comments that signaled his lack of diplomatic experience.” Sounds like Meir was humoring a young Democratic politician to ensure bipartisan support for Israel in the U.S. with crisis looming.

Back then he was naive. Today he’s super-old and slipping:

The slope of that line looks impressive and encouraging until you check the Y-axis and realize that they’re celebrating a decline in gas prices of … two cents. That reminded me of this instantly famous tweet from better days, celebrating the Biden’s administration achievement in saving you not quite two dimes at the grocery store as you planned your July 4 barbecue this year:

I never thought they’d tout a sum more meager than 16 cents but here we are. Exit question: Why didn’t they divide the Y-axis into increments of 1/1000th of a cent or whatever so that they could show the line dropping really steeply?
