Sunday morning talking heads

The Sunday shows lead this morning with two different Democratic fiascos, both of which look to cost them in next fall’s midterms. The star guest is DHS chief Alejandro Mayorkas, tasked with defending a border policy that’s managed to piss off both sides: The right wants the border closed, the left wants it fully open, so Biden has chosen a middle “porous” option that’s left everyone unhappy. Mayorkas will speak with “Meet the Press,” “State of the Union,” and “Fox News Sunday” about the crush of Haitian asylum-seekers in Del Rio and his agency’s baffling decision not to test them for COVID before admitting thousands into the United States. He’ll also continue the administration’s idiotic pander to progressives by insisting that the Border Patrol’s use of horses to police the migrant camp in Del Rio was some sort of crime against humanity.

The other fiasco is entirely domestic and will come to a head on the House floor tomorrow. Nancy Pelosi promised the centrists in her caucus weeks ago that she’d hold a vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill on September 27, hoping and expecting that the Senate would also pass the progressive-backed reconciliation bill by that date. Those hopes have now been dashed. House leftists are vowing to tank the standalone bipartisan bill if Pelosi keeps her pledge to hold a vote, fearing that if it passes they’ll lose their leverage over centrists to support the reconciliation bill. But if they tank it, it’s possible that centrists will punish them by tanking the reconciliation bill in return. Biden’s entire agenda could collapse in flames. Pelosi will chat about it this morning with “This Week” while House progressive leader Pramila Jayapal sits down with “Face the Nation” and “State of the Union” to reveal what her faction plans to do tomorrow. House centrist leader Josh Gottheimer will follow her on “State of the Union” to state his own intentions.

Elsewhere, Cory Booker and Tim Scott will discuss the disappointing end to bipartisan negotiations in the Senate over police reform. Booker is scheduled for “Meet the Press” and “State of the Union” while Scott is set for “Face the Nation.” And CDC chief Rochelle Walensky will talk to “Face the Nation” about the outlook for booster shots and her controversial decision to overrule CDC advisors by ordering third doses for people in high-risk jobs. Walensky has made many missteps during her short time as head of the agency but that wasn’t one of them. The full line-up is at the AP.
