Report: Dems considering whether AOC should ... seek a restraining order against Marjorie Taylor Greene

Well, now I’ve seen everything.

You know what, though? I don’t think this is a pure political stunt. To some degree it is: Like I said in the earlier post, Dems want a spotlight on Greene, believing she alienates more voters than she attracts.

But I suspect they believe she’s genuinely unstable and worry about what she might be capable of.

House Democratic leaders have been discussing for weeks how to handle Greene’s troubling pattern of behavior. That includes a recent discussion among Democratic leadership in which lawmakers discussed possible legal outcomes for the Georgia Republican, though nothing has been settled at this point.

For Ocasio-Cortez — who was previously harassed by Greene in 2019 — top Democrats have discussed whether it’s possible for Ocasio-Cortez to seek a restraining order against Greene, including whether she had the legal the standing to do so, according to multiple Democratic sources. Pelosi and other top Democrats have also called for an ethics investigation both publicly and privately, though the House Ethics Committee has not disclosed the existence of any such probe.

How would a restraining order in Congress work? The two aren’t allowed to be on the House floor at the same time? Greene isn’t allowed to visit the executive office building where AOC’s office is located, even if she has business there?

There are reasons why Ocasio-Cortez might worry. Start with the fact that Greene’s beliefs run a lot further afield than traditional “God and guns” righty populism. Greene has “liked” social media comments in the past about executing political enemies, including Nancy Pelosi. And her interest in QAnon apparently led her to react credulously to stories about Hillary Clinton and Huma Abedin slicing a girl’s face off and wearing it as a mask before drinking her blood.

At the very least, she’s open to the possibility that her opponents are Satanic murderers and that some of them might need killing.

She also has a habit of accosting her enemies when it’s clear that they don’t want to engage with her. She did it to David Hogg, still a teenager at the time, in 2019 while he was en route to the Capitol. Supposedly she did it to fellow freshman Cori Bush back in January, which led Bush to ask for a new office away from Greene. And she’s done it to Ocasio-Cortez on the House floor:

Two Washington Post reporters witnessed Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) exit the House chamber late Wednesday afternoon ahead of Greene (Ga.), who shouted “Hey Alexandria” twice in an effort to get her attention. When Ocasio-Cortez did not stop walking, Greene picked up her pace and began shouting at her and asking why she supports antifa, a loosely knit group of far-left activists, and Black Lives Matter, falsely labeling them “terrorist” groups. Greene also shouted that Ocasio-Cortez was failing to defend her “radical socialist” beliefs by declining to publicly debate the freshman from Georgia.

“You don’t care about the American people,” Greene shouted. “Why do you support terrorists and antifa?”

She did it to Ocasio-Cortez even before she became a member of Congress. CNN recently found deleted video of Greene visiting the Capitol in 2019 and walking around to various congressional offices to try to confront members. They found AOC’s door locked but didn’t let that stop them from trying to communicate with anyone who might be inside. Watch:

“Come out and play,” one of Greene’s companions says at one point. According to CNN, one of the guys in the clip was filmed inside the Capitol on January 6.

Back in January, a week after the insurrection, some House Democrats told NBC that they thought some of their Republican colleagues might have homicidal intentions. How different are Marjorie Taylor Greene’s beliefs from the people who broke into the Capitol chanting, “Hang Mike Pence”?

“It’s the most poisonous I’ve ever seen,” Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., said in an interview. “There’s the overall sense that maybe if some of them have guns — and likely the ones who are more into conspiracy theories and QAnon with the pedophilic satanic rings — are we safe from them?”…

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has said she feared for her life, in part because she doubted the motives of unnamed colleagues who were sheltering with her.

“There were QAnon and white supremacist sympathizers, and frankly white supremacist members of Congress, in that extraction point who I have felt would disclose my location and would create opportunities to allow me to be hurt, kidnapped, etc.,” Ocasio-Cortez, a highly visible progressive and frequent target of conservative media, said in a speech Tuesday streamed live on Instagram.

The metal detectors Pelosi had installed outside the House chamber weren’t for show. Some contingent of Democrats has reasoned that someone who’s far gone enough to believe that the “frazzledrip” video exists is far gone enough to do anything, including assassination.

Here’s Ocasio-Cortez commenting last week on Greene, calling her “deeply unwell.” I’ll be surprised if she goes as far as to ask for a restraining order but if she does I don’t think it’ll be for show. And if she does, suddenly the new litmus test for populist folk hero will be whether a leftist has a TRO out on you. Ted Cruz will be desperate for ways to have a judge tell him he can’t be within 1,000 feet of Ilhan Omar.
