Sunday morning talking heads

Only three things in life are certain: Death, taxes, and Rudy Giuliani making news during a Russiagate interview. He’s the star guest on the Sunday shows today, joining Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” to explain why the president should shouldn’t might do an interview with Bob Mueller and to confirm that Trump’s “Spygate” outrage is really just a way to get the DOJ to show its cards to his defense lawyers. He’ll also be asked about Stormy Daniels, a subject that’s brought surprising admissions from him before and probably will again. Hopefully he’s managed to touch base with his client recently after not having spoken to him for several weeks(!).

Beyond that, the bookings this morning lean heavily towards Trump arch-enemies. On “This Week” it’ll be Democrat Adam Schiff to run through his party’s talking points on how Spygate is a nothingburger. At “Meet the Press” it’s Jeff Flake, who just got done telling Harvard Law grads that Trump has debased the presidency in ways the country hasn’t seen in ages. And on “Face the Nation” and “State of the Union” James Clapper will sit down to discuss his theory that Russia swung the election from Clinton to Trump even though, by his own admission, he has no empirical evidence to support that claim.

One other guest to watch out for this morning is Marco Rubio, normally a Trump defender but someone who’s been harshly critical of him lately for caving on penalties for Chinese telecom company ZTE. Rubio will also be asked about the on-again-off-again North Korea summit and will face the same dilemma that all partisan guests this morning will when addressing that subject: You can’t hold your position too firmly because you might have to back away from it tomorrow as facts on the ground change. If you’re a Republican who thinks Trump should be congratulated for his toughness in walking away from the summit and his wisdom in being skeptical about Kim’s charm offensive, surprise — the summit might be on again before the day is out. Vice versa for Dems. The full line-up is at the AP.
