This morning the Sunday shows offer a breakfast blend of serious policy and the controversy du jour. Star guest: Mitch McConnell, who’ll be on “Fox News Sunday” and “State of the Union” to discuss the prospects for tax reform and Senate Republicans’ dilemma in whether to restore ObamaCare’s cost-sharing subsidies or not. Restore the subsidies and you’re propping up Obama’s signature program with no assurance that Trump will sign the bill; let the subsidies lapse and you’re inviting a backlash among lower-middle-class consumers on the individual market who can’t pay their premiums anymore. McConnell will also be asked about his archnemesis, Steve Bannon, and how worried he is about populists rolling over unpopular incumbents in next year’s primaries. Expected answer: Less worried than he was last week.

As for the controversy du jour, Trump’s handling of condolence calls to fallen soldiers’ families, two guests of note are booked. One, who should be generally sympathetic to POTUS, is David Petraeus, a man who may yet end up in the administration after Trump’s first round of appointees gradually departs. He’ll be on “This Week” to weigh in on John Kelly’s dust-up with Frederica Wilson as well as more substantial matters like the fate of the Iran nuclear deal. The other, who’ll be not so sympathetic to POTUS, is Gold Star father Khizr Khan, whom you’ll remember for dumping all over Trump at last year’s Democratic convention. He’s set for “Face the Nation.” Can Trump resist the temptation to unleash on Khan on Twitter after Khan inevitably tears into him in this morning’s interview? Probably, but John Kelly should hide his phone first thing this a.m. just to be safe.

Elsewhere, Chuck Schumer and Lindsey Graham will be on “Meet the Press” talking about God knows what. Amnesty, maybe? Nothing good, for sure. The full line-up is at the AP.
