Lindsey Graham, December 2015:

“You know how you make America great again? Tell Donald Trump to go to hell,” Graham said on CNN’s “New Day” on Tuesday, picking up on the GOP front-runner’s famous slogan, “make America great again.”…

“He’s a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot,” Graham told Alisyn Camerota. “He doesn’t represent my party. He doesn’t represents the values that the men and women who wear the uniform are fighting for. … He’s the ISIL man of the year.”

“I’d rather lose without Donald Trump than try to win with with him,” he went on to say. “I wish he would leave the party. I don’t care if he runs as an independent. If we lose the 2016 election, so be it.”

Now skip to 3:45 of the clip below, recorded this morning, and watch this guy giddy for two solid minutes at the amount of saber-rattling coming from Washington these days. All Trump had to do to flip Graham from “go to hell” to “I am, like, the happiest dude in America right now” was to attack Syria and come very close to attacking North Korea. Imagine if he turns around and attacks Iran too. Poor John McCain might lose his BFF forever. Pity the isolationists who thrilled to candidate Trump saying things on the trail about NATO being “obsolete” and America needing to take care of itself rather than act as the world’s policeman. Literally the furthest you can get from that position is Lindsey Graham burbling ecstatically about the White House “being tough” in a softball segment on “Fox & Friends.” I’m afraid to see where he goes from here if Trump fulfills his fondest wish and ends up sending thousands of American soldiers to take out Assad.

A surreal thought: Is Lindsey Graham eventually going to end up in Trump’s cabinet? He talks near the end here about regular phone calls with the president so clearly they’ve established some kind of rapport. If Trump continues to evolve as a hawk, “Defense Secretary Graham” isn’t totally out of the question. God help us all.
