Video: Marco Rubio pleads for civility on the Senate floor

A few days old, having come in the wake of Elizabeth Warren’s attack on Jeff Sessions, but worth watching. He understands this issue as only a man who made dick jokes about his presidential primary opponent possibly can. (He admits to a few lapses of his own on the civility front, in fairness.)

It’s impossible to watch this and not think of that arresting press conference Rubio gave three days before the Florida primary, in which he sounded genuinely shaken by some of Trump’s own highly uncivil rhetoric. The country is coming apart at the seams, he warned; then, as below, he was in vintage “better angels of our nature” Rubio mode. A few months later he endorsed Trump despite having questioned his moral influence on the country and his fitness to command the nuclear arsenal, and he’s been exceedingly sparing in his criticism ever since. Although his ostensible target here is Warren and the Democrats’ attacks on Trump’s nominees, this may be as close as we get to Rubio chastising the president himself to “elevate the discourse,” as it were.

I don’t think it’s going to work, but it’s a nice thought.
