Given the online supernova over last night’s outcome, I’m going to guess that there’ll be some interest in what he has to say. Here’s your thread to comment when ABC’s World News Tonight airs his interview with George Stephanopoulos at 6:30 ET. I’m oddly surprised to see that he looks the same now as he did in that old photo of him in uniform that the media’s been relying on since the shooting, although I don’t know why. It makes sense that he’d change his looks after he’s finished giving his side of the story, not before. Either way, there’s change in store — per John Nolte, the New York Times apparently doxxed Wilson and his wife last night, so if he was planning to return to his home at some point, he can forget it now.

What he told the grand jury:

The two men scuffled, Wilson said, and when he struggled to gain some control over the situation “and not be trapped in my car anymore,” he grabbed Brown’s arm. “The only way I can describe it is I felt like a 5-year-old holding on to Hulk Hogan.”…

When Wilson drew his gun from inside his car and told Brown to get back or he would shoot, the officer said, “he immediately grabs my gun and says, ‘You are too much of a [coward] to shoot me.'”

Wilson said he pulled his gun because “I felt that another one of those punches in my face could knock me out or worse.” Brown was bigger than the 6-foot-4 officer, and stronger, too. “I’d already taken two to the face, and I didn’t think I would, the third one could be fatal if he hit me right.”

Wilson ultimately got out of the car, and Brown began to run away. Then he stopped. And turned. And began to run back toward the officer. He made a fist with his left hand and reached under his shirt with his right. Wilson testified that he kept telling him to get on the ground. Brown didn’t.

That’s the first account I’ve seen that Brown made a move that might have looked like he was reaching for a weapon. Wilson had plenty of support from eyewitnesses, though, that Brown charged him after he got out of the car. Why Brown would do that, having tried and failed to snatch a cop’s gun and being unarmed himself, is mystifying to me. According to the autopsy, he had nothing stronger than weed in his system. He was, or would soon be, wanted for the strong-arm robbery at the convenience store and he had just hit a policeman in the face and tried to seize his weapon. What was the plan in charging a now-alarmed Wilson, who had his pistol drawn? Nothing makes sense except that the guy was in a blind rage — in which case, yeah, go figure that Wilson thought he might get badly hurt if he didn’t fire.
