Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she means contraception, not you know what. America’s abortion warriors can’t be so far gone that they’re now lamenting their ancestors’ inability to terminate them out of existence. Can they?

No, she means contraception. Ninety-nine percent sure. Now I’m imagining an alternate ending to “Back to the Future” in which Marty hands George a box of condoms in 1955 and promptly disappears. If M. Night Shyamalan ever remakes that movie, that’s how it’ll end. And yes, the thought of Shyamalan brutalizing a modern classic horrifies me as much as it does you.

From the stage at the recent Women Deliver conference, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s daughter Chelsea revealed that her much-admired maternal grandmother was the child of unwed teenage parents who “did not have access to services that are so crucial that Planned Parenthood helps provide.”

Chelsea’s grandmother was born of an unintended pregnancy. And new research shows that her family is not alone in treasuring a person who – if Planned Parenthood had been successful – would not have been born.

“Every child a wanted child” is the rallying cry of family planning organizations that promote abortion as a way to achieve that goal. The New York Times Magazine recently described a study of women who were turned away from abortion clinics because their pregnancies were too far along. Researchers found that in the vast majority of cases – 95% – the mothers bonded with their babies.

Again, I’d bet she meant contraception, not abortion. A Twitter pal raises an interesting defense: Is it really so hard to reconcile principled support for easy access to contraception, which he and I both agree with, with being glad and grateful that you exist? If you go back far enough, he notes, surely all of us are the product of unplanned pregnancies — and even rape — at various points along the line. We’re all anti-rape and most of us are pro-contraception; does that mean we all somehow wish we were never born? Point taken; we’re all hypocrites to some extent in this regard. Maybe it’s just the context that makes it odd and jarring. It’s one thing to support family planning while being glad on some level that a distant ancestor couldn’t plan you into oblivion and another to pander to Planned Parenthood in the same breath that you’re talking about what an inspiration your grandmother, who otherwise wouldn’t have existed, was to you. It’s like getting your mom a Mother’s Day card that ends with “Sorry your parents didn’t have a choice whether to have you.” Um, happy Mother’s Day.

But let’s not overthink this. Chelsea’s the daughter of one Democratic president and maybe eventually of another, and rule one for prominent Democrats is to kiss the ring of PP at any opportunity — even if it means suggesting that in a perfect PP-run world your nearest and dearest might not be here. Mission accomplished.
