Amid questions of whether Eric Holder should resign, some Democrats are defending the beleaguered Attorney General by focusing on his responsibility to protect sensitive security information.

The Hill reports that during a May 31 appearance on MSNBC’s “Jansing & Co.,” Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said Holder should not resign because he “has not in any way broken the law.”

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Sunday defended Attorney General Eric Holder, saying he thought the Justice Department chief would hold onto his job despite GOP calls for his resignation.

“There have been all kinds of accusations, but I haven’t seen anything that would prevent him from doing his job,” Schumer said. “Obviously if there’s wrongdoing we should find out who did it, but the president has confidence in Holder and I believe he’s going to stay.”…

“I don’t think there’s perjury,” Schumer said. “I don’t think any good criminal lawyer would say there’s a scintilla of evidence of perjury.”

“In any given day, our administration has about 2 million employees, and things happen,” [Valerie] Jarrett said. “We put in process procedures to make sure if there has been any wrongdoing, there will be appropriate consequences, and we will move on.”

And even with the scandals at the forefront of daily national news, Jarrett said she had no doubts about the administration’s conduct, and stressed that White House staff are concentrating on moving past the incidents.

“We have every confidence that people within the White House have behaved appropriately,” she said. “People all around the country are counting on us not to get distracted or bogged down by this.”

Even Arianna Huffington thinks that attorney general Eric Holder should resign.

“We’ve called on Holder to resign,” Huffington said on ABC’s This Week. “There’s no way that Holder can continue to do his job.

“This is about the first amendment, this is about freedom of the press,” Huffington added. “The president himself has said that you cannot have journalists being afraid that they’re going to be in the crosshairs of the law while doing their job.… he now has to take a real stand on this.”

“It’s hard to have confidence in what this attorney general says or his people say when so often it turns out not to be true.”
