Video: Obama speaks at Harvard protest in 1990

A snippet to whet your appetite for the big reveal on “Hannity” tonight by Breitbart.com team members Joel Pollak and Ben Shapiro. (Steve Bannon promised last week that they’d start rolling out what they have on Obama within 7-10 days and was true to his word.) Writes Pollak of this clip, released earlier this afternoon by BuzzFeed:

Earlier today, Buzzfeed’s Ben Smith announced on Twitter that video researcher Andrew Kaczynski had released “the mysterious Harvard/Obama/race video that the Breitbart folks have been talking about.”

The video, which Kaczynski says was “licensed from a Boston television station,” shows a young Barack Obama leading a protest at Harvard Law School on behalf of Prof. Derrick Bell, a radical academic tied to Jeremiah Wright–about whom we will be releasing significant information in the coming hours.

However, the video has been selectively edited–either by the Boston television station or by Buzzfeed itself. Over the course of the day, Breitbart.com will be releasing additional footage that has been hidden by Obama’s allies in the mainstream media and academia.

Smith initially tweeted that Kaczysnki “may” have found the long-promised Breitbart vid but then others corrected him and he retweeted the corrections. The BuzzFeed footage actually isn’t even new: After they posted it this morning, Frontline put up a post of its own reminding everyone that it first aired in PBS’s documentary “The Choice 2008.” You’ll find the clip of that below; the Obama speech comes at 6:30. According to Frontline:

While BuzzFeed did not publish all of the available footage of the event — a manager here noted that they were paying for each second of footage — they did post the entirety of what was available of Obama’s speech. While other cameras could have shot additional material from the event, no other footage of the event exists at WGBH.

And while there does appear to be editing in the footage available, that was almost certainly done in 1990. The Ten O’Clock News practice was to store completed segments as aired along with any relevant additional footage that might be useful in the future.

Some commenters in Headlines wondered whether BuzzFeed might have excised the more inflammatory parts of Obama’s speech. If you believe the above, they didn’t. And even if they had the footage, what would be gained by editing it out when they have every reason to believe the Breitbart team has it and is ready to unveil it? It’s going to come out anyway, in one of the biggest conservative forums in American media; under those circumstances, if you’re a lefty looking to help Obama on this, your best move is simply to release what you’ve got before the “Big” sites and Hannity do and spin it as hard as you can to frame the debate to O’s advantage. As it is, the brief BuzzFeed clip inadvertently operates as a teaser trailer for Pollak’s and Shapiro’s appearance tonight: Now I’m really interested to see what else they might have. And if they do end up producing something interesting, BuzzFeed and the rest of the media will be left to explain why they didn’t discover it first. Which is to say, I don’t see how BF benefits from posting a redacted clip except for the brief blip of traffic they’re getting by piggybacking on the “Big” sites’ big reveal. They must have published what they have, and this is it.
